The Four Seasons Hotel Tunis is rather like a Mediterranean oasis in the bustling capital of Tunisia. Rhenus Project Logistics was responsible for purchasing and transporting decorative items for the hotel’s lobby and recreation rooms in 2017. Many decorative objects, including books and vases, were purchased in the USA and then shipped to North Africa.
The Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills is situated just a few minutes away from Rodeo Drive. Rhenus Project Logistics transported all the furniture from China and Thailand to Los Angeles in 2017 so that 170 rooms and the lobby could be renovated.
The Marriott Hotel Nia Menlo Park Gateway luxury centre exudes the entrepreneurial spirit of Silicon Valley. The Rhenus Project Logistics specialists transported the complete furnishings for all 230 rooms from China to California in 2018.
Urban elegance meets loft design at the Hyatt Andaz Wall Street Hotel, New York. The project logistics specialist is renovating ten floors of the hotel in the city’s financial district – and this involves more than 250 rooms. In addition to transporting and storing materials, this includes removing old furniture, delivering new furniture, stoneware, fabrics, wall panels, works of art and lighting fittings as well as assembling and installing furniture, floors and lighting at the site.
The story of Rhenus activities in the hotel and casino business all started on the Chinese island of Macau, when Rhenus Project Logistics assumed responsibility for transporting and installing the equipment for the MGM and Wynn casinos.
The success story in Macau led to another casino project on Saipan, a small island in the Northern Marianas; they are part of the USA and are located in the Western Pacific, surrounded by nothing but the sea. This is where the luxurious holiday resort, Imperial Palace, is situated; it not only provides fivestar accommodation and gourmet restaurants, but is home to casinos too.
Rhenus Project Logistics handled the transportation, customs clearance and delivery of the equipment for the opening of the Imperial Palace casino in just four months during the summer of 2015. Air and sea freight operations were used to transport all the shipments. They included gaming machines and ATMs, furniture, signs, carpets, restaurant fittings and a great deal more.
Meeting the challenge
The project logistics specialist used the island of Guam in Micronesia as its transhipment point. “Our task was complex, because we had to coordinate the shipment of about 90 consignments from 40 suppliers based in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia to the remote island,” says John Kitts, Managing Director of Rhenus Project Logistics in the USA. However, that was not all: two typhoons struck the island while the company was handling the project.
“As the power supply was down, there were no phone and Internet connections. We were therefore unable to contact our partners for some time. Many roads were blocked too, so we had to draw up new routes,” Kitts explains. Despite all this, Rhenus Project Logistics managed to complete the task even earlier than planned.
A launching pad for new projects
This success story has since opened doors to many other projects in the hotel and casino sector for Rhenus Project Logistics. “We’ve gained a great deal of expertise and established a huge network. As a result, we’re not only able to handle standard transport operations, but take on many other services too ranging from quality checks at production sites to deliveries and even installing units on the spot.”
